  • An estimated 12,000 people lobby Parliament for urgent action on climate change in Westminster
  • Over 130 environmental organisations and 300 MPs support largest-ever mass lobby of Parliament
  • Gerald Jones MP joins thousands from South Wales and across the UK to call for further environmental action and 2045 net zero emissions pledge from UK Government

Gerald Jones, MP for Merthyr Tydfil and Rhymney, heard from constituents in Westminster who were among an estimated 12,000 people lobbying ministers and Members of Parliament for urgent action on the natural environment and climate change.

In the largest-ever environmental lobby of parliament, people from all corners of the UK were represented, with at least 300 MPs coming out to show support for the lobbyists and meet with their constituents. At 2pm, lobbyists rang phone alarms and alarm clocks to symbolise that ‘the time is now to act’.

Thousands of people travelling to London from South Wales and across the UK called on Parliament to go further than a commitment to zero carbon emissions by 2050, and to support measures that end the UK’s contribution to climate change definitively by 2045, before time runs out.

There were more than 130 key environmental organisations representing over 15 million people at the event – including WWF, National Trust and Friends of the Earth. The lobby follows global environmental protests, and the declaration of a climate and environment emergency by the UK parliament.

Speaking at the mass lobby, Gerald Jones said: “The time to act on climate change has come and gone time and time again, and simply declaring a climate emergency is not enough – we must take decisive action now.

“It is clear that the climate and environmental crisis is a crucial issue for many of my constituents, and from people all across the country. I’ll be working to make sure their voice is heard in Parliament at this critical moment for climate, nature and people.”
