During December I have attended a number of Carol Services and School Concerts. At a number of Services, prayers were said for children and families who through no fault of their own will not experience the happy Christmas that most of us are looking forward to. This gave a timely reminder that for some children, individuals and indeed families Christmas will be a difficult time.

We all like to enjoy Christmas and for many of us it is such a happy time, it is truly a time for family and friends and for spreading extra goodwill to our fellow human beings. However, it is perhaps the most difficult time of the year for those who have lost loved ones or who are lonely or disadvantaged.

Many people say that Christmas isn’t what is used to be? It is often the case that in our fast modern world, sometimes people find it difficult to think about what is going on outside our own front door. We can all do something about this, spread a little peace and goodwill in our own community this year, amongst our own friends and neighbours and this will go a long way to capture the true spirit of Christmas. For instance pop and see the neighbours living alone, check that they are OK and just show them that you care.

Also please remember those who aren’t as fortunate this Christmas, the many people who are ill, sad or lonely and the many children in developing countries who are dying for no other reason other than their families can’t afford the medicines that we all take for granted on the NHS.

Yes, our country and indeed our communities have our problems but we can improve our community by working together and supporting one another. There are many places throughout the world that are far less fortunate.

On behalf of myself and the staff at my constituency office, can I wish all residents of Merthyr Tydfil & Rhymney constituency a very Happy Christmas and a peaceful and healthy 2019.

The Constituency Office is now closed for the Christmas & New Year holidays and will reopen on Thursday 3rd January 2019. Emails will be checked periodically.
