Local MP welcomes Gulf delegation on their whistle stop tour

This week, Gerald was pleased to welcome a cache of visitors from the Gulf to Brecon Mountain Railway. The delegation included international buyers based in Dubai and Kuwait.

VisitBritian is the name used by the old British Tourist authority to market some of Britain’s top tourist attractions around the world. Last weekend they hosted their flagship event, ExploreGB in Liverpool with a delegation visiting Cardiff, The Celtic Manor and Brecon Mountain Railway to see some of Wales’ most popular tourist spots.

Along with Merthyr Tydfil CBC leader, Cllr Brendan Toomey, the local representatives entertained the delegation whilst they visited the Mountain Railway and took a ride along the line. The delegation also took time to visit the station house as well as the drivers cab before returning to the Celtic Manor for dinner.

“It’s a big honour for me to welcome our visitors from the Gulf today, by the looks of it everyone enjoyed.” Gerald said.

“Brecon Mountain railway has been an institution in Pant for over 30 years, and we know that people come from all over the UK and parts of Europe and America to visit it. Extending its reach to the Gulf States will make it accessible to an even larger market, bringing tourists from across the Gulf to Merthyr Tydfil. Tourism is an important and growing part of the Welsh Economy and I hope that we can capitalise on attractions like the railway to showcase Merthyr Tydfil to the world.”

Council Leader Brendan Toomey was also buoyant about the visit. “It’s a real vote of confidence in Merthyr Tydfil that VisitBritain have brought the delegation here. We all know what an asset Brecon Mountain Railway is to the area, but to have it chosen as one of the attractions for major tourist insiders to visit is great news indeed.”
