Transforming Communities in Merthyr Tydfil & Rhondda Cynon Taf
Exciting news! Under the UK Labour government’s Pride in Place programme, Merthyr Tydfil and Rhondda Cynon Taf have each been awarded £20 million over the next decade to support long-term, community-led improvements.
In addition, both areas will receive a further £1.5 million through the Pride in Place Impact Fund, aimed at delivering visible enhancements to public spaces and improving everyday life for residents. Local consultation will shape how this funding is spent so it’s vital that residents speak up about what matters most to you.
Labour is restoring pride, investing in people, and building stronger communities, helping Merthyr Tydfil, Aberdare, and the wider region thrive.
Discovering Merthyr Tydfil’s Story: Cyfarthfa 200 Immersive Experience
Thoroughly enjoyed a visit to the Cyfarthfa 200 Immersive Experience, a creative and engaging way to explore Merthyr Tydfil’s rich history.
The interactive elements make the experience genuinely fun and enjoyable. Whether you’re a local resident, part of a school group, or simply curious about Merthyr Tydfil’s global impact, it’s well worth a visit.
This is a brilliant example of how culture and education can come together to build pride and strengthen community connection.
Huge credit to everyone involved, including the Orbit Business Centre, Cyfarthfa Foundation and Merthyr Tydfil CBC for bringing this fantastic project to life.
Historic Investment to Power Jobs and Growth
During the recent US State Visit, the UK Labour government unveiled a record-breaking £150 billion investment package, aimed at boosting jobs, strengthening British industries, and driving innovation across the country.
This landmark commitment includes major deals in clean energy, life sciences, and advanced manufacturing, reinforcing Britain’s position as a global leader and creating thousands of high-quality jobs.
Labour is focused on investing in people, restoring pride, and building a stronger economy, ensuring communities like Merthyr Tydfil and Aberdare benefit from global partnerships and long-term growth.
Policing, Partnership and Community Safety
It was a pleasure to meet with South Wales Police & Crime Commissioner, Emma Wools, to hear about the impactful work being led across our region. From early intervention to community engagement, and the positive difference it’s making locally.
I also caught up recently with Inspectors Meirion Collings and Duncan Michell, who lead policing in Merthyr Tydfil and Aberdare, for a valuable discussion about local priorities and the challenges facing our communities.
I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to all three for their dedication to keeping our neighbourhoods safe, informed, and supported. Their commitment to partnership and proactive policing is truly appreciated.
Covid Fraud Crackdown Underway
A new Covid fraud hit squad has been launched to pursue those who abused pandemic support schemes.
Letters are already being sent to suspected fraudsters, warning them to repay what they owe or face serious consequences, including criminal investigation, bans from becoming company directors, and compensation orders.
Labour is taking action to recover lost public money and restore trust in how it’s spent.
Visit to Hope Church, Cwmaman
I recently visited Hope Church in Cwmaman to learn more about the wide-ranging support they offer to local residents. From the welcoming coffee morning to the community pantry and other vital services, it’s clear that this is a space rooted in care, compassion, and practical help.
The team’s commitment to meeting local needs and fostering connection is a real asset to the area, a powerful example of community-led support in action.
Raising funds for Macmillan Cancer Care
Together with Dawn Bowden MS, I hosted a Macmillan Coffee Afternoon, a chance for conversation, connection, and raising vital funds for Macmillan Cancer Support’s incredible work with people living with cancer.
Thanks to the generosity of everyone who attended, £257 was raised to help Macmillan continue providing practical, emotional, and financial support where it’s needed most.
A lovely afternoon and a reminder of what community spirit (and cake!) can achieve.
Supporting young people at Pen Y Dre Apartments
At Pen Y Dre, a facility run by Adferiad, young people are being supported as they take steps toward independent living. The team provides a safe, structured environment where residents can build confidence and develop essential life skills.
The approach is clearly making a difference, with positive outcomes and a strong focus on community-based support that empowers individuals to thrive.
Crucial Crew: Safety Skills for Life
Crucial Crew returned to Merthyr Tydfil this month, delivering vital safety lessons to local pupils through fun, hands-on learning. From fire safety to railway awareness, the sessions were engaging, informative, and packed with practical advice.
The energy and commitment from all the organisations involved created a brilliant atmosphere, and it was fantastic to see young people engaging so confidently with serious messages that will stay with them for life.
Celebrating community connections at the VAMT AGM
The Voluntary Action Merthyr Tydfil AGM offered a valuable opportunity to hear updates and connect with those working to strengthen community life across the borough.
It was a chance to recognise the dedication of staff, trustees, and volunteers who support local groups and foster strong local networks, helping ensure Merthyr Tydfil remains a place where people feel supported, included, and empowered.
Treharris Male Voice Choir in Concert
The annual concert by the Treharris Male Voice Choir was a joy to attend. Powerful voices, a packed room, and a real sense of occasion.
It was lovely to be there with Cllr Gareth Richards and Dawn Bowden MS, who compered the evening with warmth and flair. Guest artist Josef Gray added something special with his solo performance, rounding off a memorable night.
