On Tuesday 3 September Gerald Jones, MP for Merthyr Tydfil and Rhymney, attended a ceremony at Ty Penallta, Caerphilly County Borough Council’s headquarters, to raise the Red Ensign Flag and support Merchant Navy Day, raising awareness of the UK’s continuing dependence on Merchant Navy seafarers.

The ceremony saw the Deputy Leader of Council, Cllr Barbara Jones, read a citation in the presence of invited guests and members of the public before the flag was raised, reading:

“Thank you for coming together to mark Merchant Navy Day. Before the raising of the flag I will read some words from His Royal Highness the Earl of Wessex.

“We have joined together on this Day to support the Seafarers UK to remember the sacrifices, salute the courage and support the future of the often unsung personnel of our Merchant Navy. Too often are they the forgotten or invisible service, by raising the Red Ensign we are joining the nation to ensure they are remembered. We hope that this small but significant flag raising ceremony demonstrates our most sincere thanks for all that they do.”

Gerald Jones MP said:

“I am proud to have attended this morning’s important ceremony, raising awareness of the vital and continuing importance to the UK of our Merchant Navy seafarers.

“The UK has the largest port industry in Europe, and we also rely on Merchant Navy seafarers for 95% of our imports; it was also the brave men and women of the Merchat Navy who kept our country afloat during both World Wars. We can not and must not take them for granted.”
