Gerald supports awareness campaign for Alzheimer’s Research UK
Gerald joined scientists and other MPs on 16 July for the Westminster launch of an awareness-raising campaign from Alzheimer’s Research UK, the UK’s leading dementia research charity. The event saw MPs from all parties show their support for the charity’s fightback against the devastating condition, which currently affects 850,000 people in the UK.
Gerald had the chance to meet scientists at the forefront of dementia research, as well as learning about Alzheimer’s Research UK’s work to fight dementia and improve public understanding. Attendees also heard from World Dementia Envoy, Dennis Gillings, on the global response to the growing challenge of dementia and the UK Government’s work to tackle the condition.
Dementia is the most feared condition for over-55s in the UK, and nearly half of this group believe dementia is the biggest medical challenge facing the UK today. Yet less than a quarter of people in the UK recognise that brain diseases like Alzheimer’s are behind the distressing symptoms. Alzheimer’s Research UK’s national awareness-raising campaign aims to highlight the challenge of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias, and the urgent need for investment in research to fight these diseases. The event at the Houses of Parliament saw the charity bring its campaign to MPs and call for policymakers to make dementia a health priority.
Thousands of people across the Wales and in my own constituency live with the effects that dementia has on themselves or a family member. We all know somebody affected by this terrible condition, and the vital support provided by their friends and family members to support them. It’s vital that the world renowned work of Alzheimer’s Research UK is supported and progresses until we developed methods to eliminate the threat and worst affects of Alzheimer’s.”
