Last Friday (15th April), I was lucky enough to welcome pupils from Abertysswg and Fochriw Primary Schools at the Houses of Parliament.

The pupils spent the day learning about the workings of Parliament and had a full tour of the building and also had time during the day to take a flight on the London Eye. The Parliamentary Education Service organised a full programme designed to teach children about the history of Parliament and the way in which our democracy works. I was delighted to welcome local school children to Parliament, they had a great time visiting London and learning about Westminster. The building has 1000 years of history and it was a pleasure to talk with them about the work I do on behalf of the people of Merthyr Tydfil & Rhymney.

The headteacher at Fochriw Primary, Sharon Pascoe said, “This visit has provided truly valuable learning experiences. It has also helped our learners understand decision making and democracy on a much larger scale compared to pupil voice at school. The children really enjoyed meeting our local MP Gerald Jones and hearing about the work he does. No doubt these experiences will remain with our children for many years to come. The trip and surroundings steeped in history have been aspirational for our children at Fochriw Primary School.”

Davina Parfitt, the headteacher at Abertysswg Primary School said, “This trip was a fantastic opportunity to gain knowledge about the history of the Houses of Parliament and the passing of laws. It was also an opportunity for our children to learn about the general day to day roles and responsibilities of MP’s, they were also lucky enough to question their local MP.”

I would like to encourage other schools in the Merthyr Tydfil & Rhymney constituency to get in touch with my office if they are interested in organising a similar trip. Financial support towards the cost of travel is provided by the Parliamentary Education Service and I am also keen to make a contribution towards the cost of travel for local schools to ensure that as many local school children as possible get the opportunity to experience the unique history and heritage that Parliament has to offer.

Schools interested in organising a visit for pupils should contact Gerald Jones MP at Oldway House, Castle Street, Merthyr Tydfil, 01685 383739.
