Local Children add sparkle to MP & AM’s Christmas cards

Local Labour representatives Gerald Jones MP and Dawn Bowden AM have picked this year’s winner of their annual Christmas card competition. The competition, open to Primary Schools across Merthyr Tydfil and Rhymney invites pupils to design the cover image for this year’s Christmas card.

This year’s winner, Lily McCarthy from Cyfarthfa Park Primary School, was presented with a Certificate and a £30 Gift voucher for Argos by both Gerald and Dawn at a special assembly. Her winning design included a festive fluffy snowman wrapped up in a coat and scarf and the original was a collage of cotton wool and card with a speckled orange feather.

The Head of Cyfrathfa Primary School was very pleased that one of his student’s designs had been selected:

‘We are so proud of Lily and her winning entry for the Christmas card competition. Lily and the other children whom entered the competition worked hard to produce designs of such a high standard. It’s pleasing to know the winning entry is from Cyfarthfa Park Primary School and will be sent to people across the country.’

Two runners up were also selected, Megan Evans from Fochriw Primary and Nia Smith from White Rose primary, who each received an Argos gift voucher worth £15 and will supply the personal cards of Gerald and Dawn respectively this year.

Gerald Jones MP was particularly impressed by the strength of entrants this year:

We were keen to run this competition this year to showcase some of the creativity that local Kids in the constituency have, and of course we haven’t been disappointed,” the MP for Merthyr Tydfil and Rhymney said. “With so many creative entries, it was very difficult to pick a winner, but Lily’s stood out”

Dawn was also very pleased with the response of local schools to the competition.

“Both Gerald and myself were keen to organise a joint competition this year, and were delighted to be inundated with responses from across the constituency. It’s amazing how popular the competition has been and the high standard of the entries is a nice reminder how creative the children in our constituency are.”
