Member of Parliament for Merthyr Tydfil and Rhymney Gerald Jones, recently met with students from the The College Merthyr Tydfil’s Learner Assembly to discuss issues affecting them.

The Learner Assembly is a forum made up of learners who are elected each year to represent their fellow students. The forum allows the learners meet and discuss ideas for development of the college, feeding views from across each departmental area.

The meeting saw the MP discuss a number of local issues, ranging from local bus services to student finance, mental health services and parking.

“We must create an environment where students have the confidence to stand up and speak up on issues they feel passionate about and where decision makers respond”, Gerald said.

“The Learners Assembly is an excellent forum for college students to raise problems that impact them within the college. During the meeting, a number of important issues where raised which I will now be looking in to.

“Having worked closely with learners in previous years, I am pleased to have been able to meet the Assembly so early into this academic year and look forward to working with them over the coming months.”
