FIRST “COMMUNITY STAR” IS NAMED

The first person to receive a “Community Star” award from Gerald Jones MP and Dawn Bowden AM is recently retired school crossing patrol Mrs Eirwen Selkirk. Eirwen was presented with her award by Dawn Bowden AM and Gerald Jones MP for Merthyr Tydfil and Rhymney today (Friday 12th January).

Eirwen ran the school crossing patrol near Abertysswg primary school in the Upper Rhymney valley for over 40 years.

Gerald Jones MP said “Eirwen has shown a long term commitment to the safety of the children in her village and has helped generations of children to reach school safely. She became a vital and visible part of village life for so many years. It is very fitting that we award her the first ever “Community Star” certificate”.

Dawn Bowden AM said “The purpose of our Community Star awards is to give extra recognition to so many people across the constituency who give great service to others, or go the extra mile in service of others. Eirwen’s long term commitment to her role as a school crossing patrol is lovely story about someone rooted in their own community and I congratulate her on receiving the award”.

Eirwen commented “It is very pleasing to be recognised as the first Community Star. When I started the work as a school crossing patrol I never thought it would last over 40 years. It has given me so much joy to play my part in helping to keep the children of Abertysswg safe in the sun, rain and snow on their way to school. I have also become a friend to so many children, many of who are now adults in the village”.
