Putting Merthyr Tydfil and Rhymney at the Heart of Parliament

Christmas Message from Gerald Jones MP (DEC 2016)

December 2016

Christmas is a happy & joyous time for most people. Many families have time to spend together over the holiday period, more than they do throughout the remainder of the year with the hustle and bustle of modern life. Please remember though that there is a world outside our front window and think of those for whom Christmas is a difficult and stressful time, including those who have lost loved ones, those who are ill or live alone and indeed those who have no home.  Please also think of those continuing to work throughout the festive season including the Emergency Services & Primary Care Workers, Council Services such as Refuse Collectors, Postal Workers, Shop workers, all who have an increased workload at this time of year.

Visiting Prince Charles Hospital to thank Staff for all their hard work over the Christmas period

UK Government austerity has caused hardship for many families in our area. We are living in uncertain times where families, including more families in work, are forced to use food banks due to cuts to tax credits, zero hours contracts or the rising cost of living. I see this regularly with the many hundreds of cases that I have tried to help throughout the year when people have attended one of my advice surgeries or contacted my office. Britain has become a more unfair country under this Tory Government. Our communities, more than ever need to be resilient. We are blessed with strong community spirit, perhaps not as strong as it was but it is still there. We have hundreds of dedicated volunteers who support foodbanks, night shelters and a wide range of charities and groups that help promote a spirit to help us through the difficulties our communities face. We must acknowledge and thank them all.

Finally I'd like to wish everyone a Happy Christmas and best wishes for the New Year from myself and the Team
