After learning more about the benefits of smart meters at the Labour Spring conference, Gerald Jones MP is calling on the people of Merthyr Tydfil & Rhymney to contact their energy supplier about installing their smart meter.

With nearly 5 million smart meters already installed across Great Britain, Gerald Jones MP is looking forward to seeing this new technology in more and more homes across Merthyr Tydfil & Rhymney. Those who have upgraded are already feeling the benefits.

Eighty-one per cent of people who already have smart meters would recommend them to others, with a similar proportion (82 per cent) having taken at least one step to cut down on their energy usage. (February 2017 Smart energy outlook).

Smart meters will bring everyone in Merthyr Tydfil & Rhymney and across the rest of Wales and Great Britain accurate bills at no additional cost. The amount of gas and electricity that’s been used will, for the first time, be shown in pounds and pence and in near real time. Consumers will be able to see exactly how much their next bill will be, and can make informed choices about their energy use.  The out-dated system of manual meter readings and estimation will come to and end, and finally the inconvenient prepayment system will be completely revolutionised for the many constituents currently using these meters.

After hearing more about the technology from Smart Energy GB, the voice of the smart meter rollout, Gerald Jones MP, said:

“I am confident that smart meters will give us all much more control of what we spend on gas and electricity, and finally put an end to estimated bills.

“I was delighted to see first-hand how smart meters will benefit my constituents and I would encourage everyone to call their energy supplier today and ask for an appointment to get their own smart meter fitted.”

Over the next few years every home in Great Britain will be offered a smart meter. To find out when you can upgrade, contact your energy supplier or visit www.smartenergygb.org/get-yours to find out more.

About smart meters and the rollout

Smart meters will replace the traditional meters we currently have in our homes. They will provide consumers with accurate bills, near real time information on energy usage in pounds and pence, and greater control over their gas and electricity. The smart meter rollout is an essential technology upgrade, unprecedented in its scale, to improve Great Britain’s energy infrastructure. Between now and 2020, everyone across England, Scotland and Wales will be offered a smart meter by their energy supplier at no extra cost. Over two million smart meters have already been installed.
